BRCGS awards AA certification to WZ Packaging

We are proud to report that WZ Packaging has maintained the top quality standard in food grade packaging materials, achieving AA accreditation in the British Retail Consortium Global Standard (BRCGS).

BRCGS Packaging Materials is the leading global standard recognised by retailers and specifiers for product safety, quality and operational criteria and confirms that our site is providing products that are quality assured, legally compliant, and authentic.

BRCGS also helps to support us in our drive for sustainable and environmental-friendly packaging.

FSC® certification: Supporting healthy forests

October 2023

At WZ Packaging we have always sourced our materials responsibly.  Forest Stewardship Council FSC® certification helps us to make even better decisions.

We are FSC® certified with our current certificate being valid until 2026.  Last week our plant in Telford was audited by the FSC® to ensure we were still fully compliant and up to date with all the criteria and Chain of Custody standards.  We are pleased to confirm that we passed the audit with flying colours.

FSC® certified material is tracked all along the supply chain and kept separate from non-certified material. From beginning to end, the product is environmentally compliant with FSC® criteria and expectations.

Certification with the FSC® ensures we are supporting environmentally and socially responsible forestry, protecting the future of our forests and standing against harmful practices like deforestation and illegal logging. We are very proud to be a part of this important mission.

A Bright Future

At WZ we have completed the installation of 1320 solar panels at our Telford plant.   “Using solar power will reduce our carbon dioxide emissions significantly, lessen our reliance on conventional energy and ultimately benefit the environment “said Stuart Poyner, Operations Manager.

The sun is the earth’s most plentiful source of energy and is renewable, meaning that it will never be used up.  At WZ approximately half of the roof area is now covered by solar panels; photovoltaic cells on the panels convert sunlight into direct currency electricity which is then converted into power to drive the machines. It creates no carbon emissions or greenhouse gases making it a “clean” energy source.

In terms of Co2 savings, the installation will offset 127 tons of carbon dioxide per annum which is the equivalent of 43.9 tons of waste being recycled instead of going to landfill, or over 315,000 miles driven by an average vehicle.  

The other good news is that we don’t even have to worry about the weather in the UK!  Solar energy systems can generate electricity in any climate. Whilst cloudy days do reduce the amount of electricity produced, cold does not affect productivity.

In association with Creating Tomorrow’s Forest, the emissions from the production and transport of the solar panel installation have been fully offset by planting 53 trees to help restore biodiversity in the UK.

As part of our ongoing commitment to the environment the company is continuously monitoring the environmental performance of our production facility. We will continue to adopt renewable energy and efficiency solutions and encourage a lower carbon waste infrastructure across the supply chain as part of the target to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
